About Traditional Games
Most game websites stop at the board. We believe every traditional game is a doorway into Chinese history, mathematics, and culture.
Our Mission
Traditional Games is a small, independent cultural project. Our goal is to build a playable digital museum where anyone around the world can experience the games China has played for thousands of years.
When you slide the wooden blocks in Huarong Dao, you are not just solving a puzzle — you are re-enacting Cao Cao's desperate escape at the Battle of Red Cliffs. When you place a stone in Go, you are participating in a tradition of strategic thought that has fascinated scholars for over 2,500 years. When you untangle the Nine Linked Rings, you are handling a topological marvel that puzzled mathematicians centuries before the term "topology" existed.
From the topological brilliance of the Nine Linked Rings to the silent strategy of Go, these games are not just entertainment — they are artifacts. They carry the fingerprints of the people who played them: their humor, their philosophy, their understanding of the world. We want to make these artifacts accessible to modern audiences without requiring downloads, accounts, or prior knowledge.
Why We Do This
Many of these games are on the edge of being forgotten. In an age of video games and instant entertainment, traditional puzzles and board games risk fading into obscurity. But we believe they deserve better. They are not relics to be placed behind glass in a museum — they are living traditions that can still challenge, delight, and teach us today.
By bringing them online, we hope to give them a new generation of players. Whether you are a curious beginner who has never heard of these games, or a seasoned player looking to revisit childhood memories, this site is for you.
How We Build
Every game on this site is carefully researched and rebuilt from scratch using modern web technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript). This means:
- No downloads: Everything runs directly in your browser.
- No tracking: You don't need to sign up or create an account to play. We don't use invasive analytics or sell your data.
- Cultural context: Alongside every game, you'll find its origins, rules, and the history that shaped it.
- Authentic mechanics: We don't simplify or "westernize" the rules. Every game is implemented as faithfully as possible to its traditional form.
- Open and free: This project is not monetized. No ads, no paywalls, no in-app purchases.
Our Growing Collection
Our digital museum is a work in progress, and it is always expanding. Currently, you can explore a selection of classic games — from the sliding blocks of Huarong Dao to the strategic depths of Go and the star-shaped races of Chinese Checkers.
But we are far from finished. New games are researched, coded, and added regularly. The goal is to cover the full spectrum of traditional Chinese play — board games, puzzle toys, card games, and more. This is a long-term project, and the collection will keep growing.
