Welcome to the Traditional Games Museum

Welcome to our digital museum!

We are dedicated to preserving and sharing the ancient games that have entertained and challenged minds in China for thousands of years. From the sliding-block cunning of Huarong Dao to the quiet depths of Go, these games are more than pastimes — they are living records of strategy, philosophy, and culture.

Why We Built This

Most game websites stop at providing a simple board. We wanted to go further.

Here, every game comes with its origin story, the rules that evolved across dynasties, and the poetry that mentions it. A single board can carry a thousand years of thought: the way a rule changed under the Tang, the way a poet described a losing move, the way a puzzle became a metaphor for escape or patience. We believe that context is what turns a game into a heritage.

What You Will Find Here

  • Game histories — where each game came from, who played it, and how it spread.
  • Rules across dynasties — how the same game was played differently in different eras.
  • Poetry and literature — verses and passages that mention these games.
  • Playable boards — try the games yourself, against an AI opponent.
  • Puzzles and challenges — classic problems, from Huarong Dao to endgame studies.

A Living Collection

This museum is not a fixed exhibit. We are continually adding games, refining rules, and tracing new connections between play and culture. Some entries are well documented; others are still being pieced together from fragments of old texts. If you spot an error or know a variant we have missed, we would love to hear from you.

Start Exploring

Feel free to explore our collection, play against the AI, and dive into the history. Whether you are here for a quick puzzle or a long study of Go, we hope you leave with a new appreciation for the games that have shaped minds for millennia.

Welcome — and enjoy your visit.
